Common Concrete Foundation Types in the Pacific northwest

Slab Foundation with traditional footings

A slab foundation with traditional footing is a construction method where a flat, solid concrete slab is laid directly on the ground and reinforced with footings. These footings, made of concrete and often reinforced with steel, are placed below the frost line to provide stability and support the weight of the structure, preventing shifting or settling. This type of foundation combines the simplicity of a slab with the added stability of traditional footings, making it a cost-effective and durable choice for various building projects in the Pacific Northwest.

Crawl Space Foundation

A crawl space foundation is a type of building foundation that elevates the structure above the ground, creating a small, unfinished space underneath, usually about one to three feet high. This space, known as a crawl space, allows access to plumbing and electrical systems. Crawl space foundations are often used in damp areas or where the soil is prone to shifting, as they help protect the structure from moisture and facilitate better air circulation. They also provide some insulation from cold ground temperatures. This type of foundation can be more cost-effective than a full basement but offers more accessibility than a slab foundation.

Monolithic Slab Foundation

A monolithic slab foundation is a type of concrete foundation that is poured all at once, forming a single solid structure. It integrates both the slab and the footings, which are thicker areas of concrete poured at the edges and under load-bearing walls to provide extra support. This foundation type is known for its quick installation process and is commonly used in areas with stable soil conditions and mild climates. Monolithic slabs are cost-effective and provide a strong, stable base for buildings.

Floating Slab Foundation

A floating slab foundation is a type of concrete foundation that is not anchored to the ground with footings. Instead, it consists of a thick concrete slab that “floats” on a layer of gravel or insulation. This design allows the slab to move slightly with changes in the soil beneath, making it suitable for areas with shifting soils or frost heave. Floating slabs are commonly used for smaller structures like garages, sheds, or additions where heavy loads are not a concern.
